When Tobacco Smoke Smells Also of the Mouth Which Exhales it
First performed during Performa07, at White Box (NY) by Fei, Kato Hideki and Ed Tomney.

When Tobacco... is a sound work about cinema, particularly those events which are most ephemeral. Each performer selects a film extracts a score from only the sound effect and Foley events, which are reproduced live. Discarding all of the principle elements of the original film—all imagery and dialog, the timing of the original events are preserved, each sound performed on either amplified props or analog electronics. Divorced from the visual and narrative elements, these incidental sounds are no longer functional but nonetheless retain a cinematic quality. The odd timing, long pauses, and unidentifiable sound associations contribute to a skeletal remain, erased of all that viewers usually pay attention to in experiencing film.
